The Political Cirque

On my Mind

July 22, 2016

Saw Cirque yesterday and it was a fine show full of contortionists, daredevils, jugglers and clowns. I was really impressed by the sets, props, and costumes. Really great craft. If you’re into steam punk you’ll get a bonus thrill or two. As I got in my car, I turned the radio to NPR and Trump was just beginning. Boy, did he try hard to kill the good mood of that show.

I didn’t think it was as bad a speech as others, but I will say that I am impressed that you can talk for sixteen hours straight and never once lay out a detailed plan about how you want to achieve your lofty goals.

To be fair, he was detailed about what he thought was wrong in America. His facts were often incorrect and full of misdirection, sleight of hand, and half-truths, but at least he painted the picture he wanted us to see.

Lots of promises. LOTS OF PROMISES. LOTS OF PROMISES.

Of course, he followed all his promises up by playing the song, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” so perhaps he ended by being honest. I think the song is meant to explain to voters, “You may want all these things I’m promising, but hell, I plan to deliver them as much as I do the checks I never send to charities. No, you can’t always get what you want. You really can’t get what you want. If you’re lucky though I may leave you with what you need to barely survive. I will leave us with what you need and nothing more. The rest I’m taking for myself.

The Proof isn’t in the pudding, it’s in the mail.
