The Last Mayor’s Son is an oddly addictive read. It flows easily and is well paced with characters that are rich with emotion and subtext. The world building is interesting, especially beautiful is the interweaving of how the wood of the setting’s Treebound village is cured, treated, and used in all its form and function. It’s a setting filled with ghosts, faerie, and humans. The ghosts, which come in the form of the parents of the prodigal mayor’s son, deserve a shout out. They provide the heart and compassion in the story. It’s through them that the reader sees the value of the town that their son must save.
